How to Start Living Sustainably

Eco-friendly and sustainability are the latest buzzwords. For the past few years, we've heard a lot about global warming and rising temperatures and waste and destruction of nature. And people are learning they can play a role in reducing these issues.

You may want to be one of those people, but you might not know how to begin. Good news! We've got some good info on sustainable living and how to start.

Sustainable living means actively choosing to live within your means, care for the environment, and in the process enhance your way of life. It can result in reducing your carbon footprint, reducing your impact on natural resources, and enjoying a healthier lifestyle.

1. Use less energy.

You can do this by turning off lights, turning your heat down, hang drying your clothing, taking an occasional cold shower, investing in energy-efficient appliances, and insulating your home to name a few.

2. Go paperless.

Ask to get your bills and receipts and other documents online. Bonus: This makes them easier to store and locate while being better for the environment. Inventory the ways and reasons you use paper and see how you can change.

3. Use renewable energy.

Consider buying an electric car or getting solar panels installed on your home.

4. Recycle and reuse.

Get a designated recycle bin and learn proper recycling practices. Many cities offer recycling services and will pick up your recycling weekly. Buy reusable products and avoid single-use plastics and products. This article from OneGreenPlanet includes a long list of items you can continually reuse and creative ways to do so.

5. Start a garden and compost.

Planting and caring for your own garden can be a fun hobby, a way to save money, and a great way to support the planet. Composting is also a productive way to reuse your waste.

6. Drive less.

When possible, walk, bike, or take public transportation. Driving less is a great way to live sustainably while providing an opportunity for exercise and fresh air.

7. Look for products and brands that are eco-friendly.

Many brands and products make it abundantly clear whether they are eco-friendly or how they are safe for the environment. Do your research and seek out those products.

There are many quick and easy things you can do to become more sustainable. It's simple to start, and once you do, it's easy to find more ways to alter your lifestyle to live better and cultivate a healthier environment. What are you doing today to be more sustainable?
