How to Disinfect Faucets
Have you ever caught your cat licking your kitchen faucet? I have. And I’ve seen my cat licking her backside multiple times.
Aside from whatever bacteria is on your pet’s tongues, your faucet breeds mold, mildew, and lime. How often do you get a glass of water from the tap? Or use the water from your kitchen sink to cook? Or clean? How can you clean with something that is dirty?
The answer is you can’t and you shouldn’t. That’s why we have everything you need to know about cleaning and disinfecting your faucet.
How often should you disinfect your faucet?
Once a week: Disinfect your faucet.
Once every few weeks: Deep clean your faucet.
Once every year: Replace your faucet.
What type of cleaner works best on a faucet?
We’ve got three essential cleaning solutions to use.
- Vinegar: An easy way to clean your faucet is to use distilled white vinegar. Fill a small resealable bag half full with vinegar and attach it to your faucet with a rubber band or hair tie. Your faucet should be submerged in the vinegar. The vinegar does a great job disinfecting and killing germs and breaking down any built-up gunk and grime.
- Dish soap: Dish soap and warm water can be a great gentle cleaner for the outside of your faucet. Use dish soap when your sink faucets aren’t terribly dirty. Drying with a cloth will help your faucets shine.
- Baking soda: Use baking soda to remove any stains. Often you can scrub the stains with a small amount of baking soda and water. An old toothbrush does a great job.
Will disinfecting work?
Disinfecting your faucet effectively will kill bacteria, mold, and mildew that is lingering on your faucet waiting to get you sick. You use your faucets to wash your hands, your dishes, your food, and often you use it to stay hydrated. That means there are so many opportunities for potential bacteria to make you sick. Cleaning and disinfecting is a simple and easy way to ensure you stay safe and healthy.
