What Is Making Our Phone So Germy?

We use our phone all day, every day, for more than phone calls and text messaging. It’s no surprise that our phone picks up germs throughout the day. But where exactly is all that gunk coming from?

Meals: Most people don’t wash their hands after a meal. If you don’t, you transfer bacteria and other things, such as oil and food particles, to the screen and other parts of your phone. It gives leftovers a whole new meaning.

Restrooms: Using your phone after going to the restroom—or worse, in the restroom—is an open invitation for millions of germs, including E. coli, to hop on your phone. If you use a public toilet, you're especially likely to pass on germs from other people who’ve touched the surface before you.

Public transportation: If you often commute via public transportation, you probably have more germs on your phone. You touch surfaces such as poles, armrests, and door handles that a thousand others have touched, most likely without washing their hands. Those germs pass to your screen when you touch it.

Sweat: When you gossip on your phone for a long time with your BFF, you tend to sweat and deposit whatever's in that sweat on your phone screen. Taking your phone to the gym means exposing your phone to fellow fitness enthusiasts' sweat as well.

Pets: Love playing with your pets? I’m sure you wash your hands after touching them before you sit down for a meal, but do you wash them before you touch your phone? Probably not.

Other people: Your phone may be your prized possession, but it is quite rare that no one else touches it. You may often pass it to others to take pictures or make a call. They end up passing germs from their hands to your phone. According to research, 82 percent of hands have bacteria on them.

Other surfaces: You are likely to keep your phone on surfaces such as the table, desk, bag, pocket, drawer, etc. These often have germs, dust particles, and other microbes that get transferred to your phone.
