Mold releases microscopic spores (2–100 microns), and the most problematic black-mold spores can be small enough to skirt a HEPA filter's limit. Pollen, pet dander, and dust-mite debris are the most common indoor triggers — and the ultrafine fragments that carry the most reactive allergen proteins are small enough to slip through a 0.3-micron HEPA filter. Indoor trigger levels can run 2–5× higher than outdoors, and the ultrafine particles under 0.1 micron reach the smallest airways where they do the most.
